RC OHR Seminar Series

The RC OHR Seminar Series provides a platform for scientific exchange across disciplines relevant to the One Health concept. Held on the first Wednesday of each month, the series brings together researchers from the fields of human, animal, and environmental health to share their latest findings and discuss emerging challenges and opportunities. Speakers include principal investigators and junior group leaders from the Research Center One Health Ruhr as well as invited external experts. The seminar series aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, stimulate new collaborations, and strengthen the One Health community within and beyond the UA Ruhr.

Professor Alpaslan Tasdogan is Professor of Tumor Metabolism and Microenvironment within the Research Alliance Ruhr and Director of the Institute of Tumor Metabolism at the Department of Dermatology, University Hospital Essen. As a Principal Investigator at the Research Center One Health Ruhr, his research focuses on understanding how tumour cells adapt their metabolism during tumour progression and metastasis, with a particular emphasis on melanoma.

Within the Research Center One Health Ruhr, Professor Tasdogan contributes expertise in cancer metabolism and translational oncology, strengthening the Center's interdisciplinary efforts to better understand disease mechanisms and develop innovative therapeutic strategies within the One Health framework.

Professor Bernd Sures is Professor of Aquatic Ecology at the University of Duisburg-Essen and Founding Director of the Research Center One Health Ruhr. His research explores how environmental stressors such as pollutants, parasites, and climate change affect aquatic ecosystems and their implications for environmental and human health within the One Health framework. He also serves as Speaker of the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1439 RESIST, which investigates how freshwater ecosystems respond to multiple environmental stressors and recover from disturbance.

Professor Helen Blank is Professor of Predictive Cognition at Ruhr University Bochum and Principal Investigator at the Research Center One Health Ruhr. Her research explores how the human brain combines prior knowledge with sensory information to guide perception, learning, and decision-making in an ever-changing environment.

Her group investigates the neural mechanisms underlying predictive processing, with a particular focus on speech and face perception. By combining behavioural experiments, computational modelling, and neuroimaging, the team aims to better understand how the brain adapts to uncertainty and supports successful communication and cognition.

Within the Research Center One Health Ruhr, Professor Blank contributes expertise in cognitive neuroscience and predictive processing, expanding the Center's interdisciplinary research on perception, learning, and adaptive behaviour.

Professor Caspar Schwiedrzik is Professor of Cognitive Neurobiology at Ruhr University Bochum and Principal Investigator at the Research Center One Health Ruhr. His research focuses on the neural mechanisms that enable humans and other animals to learn, adapt, and respond flexibly to changing environments.

His laboratory investigates how the brain recognizes and anticipates new environmental challenges and how learning supports cognitive and behavioural flexibility. Using a multimodal approach that combines electrophysiology, neuroimaging, behavioural experiments, and computational modelling in humans and other animals, the team aims to uncover the fundamental neural principles underlying learning and adaptation.
